Enjoying Safe Sax In Vegas
2August 27, 2008 by esarsea
The wife and I just returned from our annual visit to Sin City. We had a great time (as usual) and Vegas was in typical August form, surpassing 100 degrees every day before noon.
During our last 3 trips to Vegas we stayed at THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, Red Rock Casino Resort and Bellagio. This time we opted to stay at the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street in downtown Vegas.
One of the highlights of our trip was catching a peformance by Carl “Safe Sax” Ferris on Fremont Street. Carl performs nightly as part of the “Fremont Street Experience.”
According to the bio on Carl’s website, “…Carl has been involved with music all his life. He was recognized for his vocal abilitities at an early age and then began playing saxaphone at the age of twelve. Carl is self taught on the guitar, keyboards, flute and has been writing and performing since his mid-teens.
His bio goes on to add, “After eighteen years of performing and sharing the stage in South Florida with Jaco Pastorius, Dave Mason, South Paw, Jinks, Slam, Electric Light Orchestra Most Wanted and The Marshall Tucker Band, Carl moved his unique talents to Las Vegas.”
There are a number of Youtube videos of Carl performing, but none of them really seem to do him justice in my opinion. Here though is one of the better ones I’ve seen:
We ended up buying all 3 of the CDs he had for sale and have been enjoying them since we got home. On your next trip of Vegas, I’d highly recommend paying a visit to Fremont Street and catching Carl!

I still haven’t done the Fremont Street thing. But I intend to make up for that next month! I’ll have to check out Carl, too, while I’m there. (Plus, I have to check to see who’ll be at Boulder Station for a free show while I’m in town.)
