Eric Czar – Melody and Movements for Electric Bass DVD

After decades of working in bands as a professional bassist in New York City, and touring all over the US, Canada and Europe, Eric Czar is finally stepping out from the shadows of sideman status; exploring his own voices as a composer and performer, and utilizing the unique timbres of custom made, 7 string fretted and fretless basses as, “Strangely evocative” lead instruments.

Eric believes the “Extended range” bass has much to contribute to the evolution of modern music. The feedback, testimonials, and press he has received thus far would tend to indicate the public agrees. They also serve as an ever growing testament to the influence Eric is having on players (and listeners) of all genres of music.

To date, Eric’s solo videos and recordings have all been done at home with little to no budget. Written and performed by Eric, and fundamentally experimental, his compositions draw inspiration from all genres Eric has entertained over the years; classical, rock, funk, jazz, and ambient.

As a result of Eric’s rapid growth in popularity and influence on Youtube, Facebook and other platforms, his goal is to remix and master the existing recordings so they are suitable for broadcast, sale and most importantly, enjoyable listening. Eric explains this is easily accomplished, thanks to the digital era. Eric plans to utilize a professional caliber studio and engineer, along with the equipment, resources and objectivity that is above what he has at home. He hopes to improve the overall sound quality and clarity of his recordings, with the intent of releasing them as digital downloads on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby etc. in both CD and DVD format. Eric explains that the video performances will serve as an educational tool for players (reminiscent of the instructional videos that inspired him in his youth), and also provide insight to how this unusual music is written and performed.

Eric’s goal is to raise $3,500 to cover the costs of remixing, mastering, duplication of hard-copy CD/DVDs (featuring his own artwork) as well as some promotional costs.

Through this sponsorship/pledge drive process, Eric Czar hopes to finance what’s quickly become a documented source of inspiration for musicians and composers all over the globe. According to Eric, “I honestly didn’t expect my home videos to be this well received, but now that I see they are, I’m hoping to offer the best quality product that I can.”

Turn It Up Tuesday!

This week’s “Turn It Up Tuesday” revisits a band I featured back on April 12th, ZED. A few things have happened since that post.

I’ve exchanged several emails with the guys in the band, and we discussed the idea of starting a street team. This eventually led to a conference call where we discussed the idea further. I’m pleased to report that we’ve got the framework in place and launched ZEDHEADS.org, home of the ZED Street Team.

If the verbage (and promotional ideas) look familiar to some of you, it should. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I’ve recycled many of the things I used for the Joe Bonamassa Street Team back in the day. Thanks to “The Internet Archive Wayback Machine” (and some help from Jane Hall) I’ve been able to retrieve much of the material from the old JB Fan Website that’s been offline for years. I was kind of fun to go back and review that old website.

But anyway, back on topic. I’m really looking forward to giving the guys in ZED a hand. I absolutely love their music. It’s a brand of rock that truly bridges the gap between the classic rock of my era and today’s metal bands. Ever since I heard them on Youtube and bought their CD I’ve been hooked.

I was fortunate enough to preview the songs the guys have planned for their sophmore release, and they’re outstanding! ZED is heading back to the studio in about a month to start laying down tracks for their next album.

I also love these guy’s sense of humor. Check out this page on ZEDHEADS.org which features Youtube videos for each song on their debut album, “The Invitation.” The comments contained in the “Star Wars” scrolling text at the start of each song will give you an idea about just how much fun these guys are.

So yes, I’ve put my street team hat back on again – and it still fits! Let the fun begin.

I saw Joe Bonamassa Friday Night……….

……. and was blown away! First time since 2006 when ticket prices were pretty much a bar tab, prices for this gig cost us $200.00 for both Viv & I and it was worth every penny. The set list pretty much followed what he is seen playing on his most recent blu-ray, “Live from Beacon Theater” (another ho-hummer, IMHO) with a few welcome journeys into some of the older stuff. One real treat of the evening was when he suddenly went into Blues Deluxe and just ripped it! Another real treat was when he and Carmine Rojas would get together and play some real firey improv stuff that reminded me allot of the Cream tune “Spoonful” off the Wheels of Fire “Live at the Fillmore” disc. Oh, did I mention that Carmine was on fire too?

I know we’ve all bemoaned the fact that Joe is no longer playing with the youthful inspiration and intensity found on his Ft. Wayne DVD but I will dare to say that the way he was playing here in Reno was as good if not better as he was REALLY playing from the heart. Countless standing ovations and there were a couple of times when the crowd was actually yelling and screaming during his performance, something not seen since his “Heartaches were Nickles” rendition from that forementioned Ft. Wayne DVD.

Joe is BACK!!!!…….. big time and if you have a chance to check him out on this tour, I think you too will be pleasantly shocked and surprised.

Turn It Up Tuesday!

It’s been a while since a Turn It Up Tuesday episode has really warranted being turned up. Well, that’s about to change. Check out these 3 cuts from “Zed” whose debut album The Invitation is scheduled for release this Spring.

I’ve had some trouble being able to locate any information about them online. It appears there is another band out there that goes by the name Zed. The Myspace and Facebook pages I found for Zed are for a different band, and I haven’t been able to find a traditional website for them either.

(Edit/Update: See comments)

Maybe one of the band members subscribes to Google alerts for Zed, and will see this post and pay us a visit here. I’d love to hear from these guys and have them bring us up to speed with what they’re doing. This stuff rocks!

Enjoy, and Turn It Up!

Another Stunning Composition and Performance by Eric Czar

This one consistently turns me into a mouth-breather. Extremely captivating. I find myself at a loss to write anything that really does this piece justice. It’s like a hybrid mix of ambient music (which Eric does so well) and a more traditional instrumental piece.

Well, I guess there’s nothing really ”traditional” about music composed for and performed on 7-string basses. See, I told you I was at a loss for words. I’m not even making sense this morning.

Maybe one of you can give it a try in the comments section. Be sure to watch it all the way through – it’s a true work of art.

More Fun With Animoto

Back in October of last year I generated a post called Fun With Animoto, and shared a video I had put together for one of my websites.

Last night I put together another video for a different website. It took me about 15 minutes to create and upload to Youtube, start to finish. I’m not sure that I am 100% happy with the music, but I guess it came out ok. Check it out below:

With a free Animoto account you can create videos up to 30 seconds in length. Upgrade to an optional ”Plus” account for $5 per month, and create unlimited feature-length videos. As you can tell, I still think it’s a pretty cool (and fun) service!

You can visit Animoto here to get your free account!

Black Country Communion Blu-ray Rocks

The much anticipated release of Black Country Communion’s “Live Over Europe” concert video arrived on my doorstep back on November 18th, 2011. A concert disc featuring shows from various stops on their tour across Europe last summer, most of the shows on this disc were filmed in Germany.

This, as many of you know is the supergroup comprised of Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian. Many JB fans who visit this blog were eager to hear just what these four musicians from different backgrounds might produce and I know in my case, I was not all that impressed with their first CD titled Black Country Communion (I didn’t bother with their second offering). One of my main complaints was how abrassive Glenn Hughes voice sounded. Probably more to due with the mix, it just grated on me. But being a fan of the visual concert experience, I figured why not give the blu a shot. After all, concert settings can sometimes have a completely different vibe from the studio offering and that being said, this blu totally rocks. BUT, it did take me a couple of months with numerous listens to come to this conclusion as it didn’t reach out and grab me at first.

So what’s inside the case besides a nice little booklet complete with photos and liner notes? First off, if you think that this is a project headed up by blog fav Joe Bonamassa, fuggetta bout it! Glenn Hughes is clearly the star, or at least he’s definitely the man in front with the microphone. For his age, he still displays allot of energy onstage and is clearly seen having a blast. His stage antics are a hoot as well though start to get old near the end with his mouth wide open most of the time. Most of the songs seem to have a notable Hughes influence going back to his Deep Purple/Blackmore days with the exception of a couple of tunes Joe wrote such as “The Ballad of John Henry”. They even do a pretty nice version of the classic DP tune “Burn” at show’s end. Joe takes some turns with his own solos though I found them too short and fairly predictable as is usually the case with any 4 to 5 or so minute tune. Joe’s performance here is completely different from his Albert Hall show where he was able to showcase his blues roots. This is NOT a blues band…….. just good old Rock and Roll. Jason Bonham is a rock solid drummer. No flash, just a consistent drive that shows how much his style was influenced by his late father, Led Zepp drummer John Bonham. Derek Sherinian comes from a Prog background. A notable resume that includes Dream Theater, Planet X as well as many solo albums with appearances from many ”name” musicians. The problem here is, just like his appearance on Billy Idol’s “In Super Overdrive” concert vid, he goes largely un-noticed, both visually and audibly. I guess you could call his contribution on this disc as one of mostly background ”color” with a few solos thrown in.

As far as the video and audio quality of this concert (I’m reviewing the Blu-ray version), let’s just say the audio is awesome, the video sucks. Excepting the poor mix of Sherinian’s keys, the audio is a well mixed and forceful sound experience. I’ve read a few complaints here and there that some find the bass midrange to be slightly lacking that results in Glenn’s bass lines somewhat hard to hear but that was not my experience. Joe’s guitar is always in the forefront and is dynamic and well placed in the soundstage as are Bonham’s drums. The video for the most part, just sucks. Directed and edited by Phillippe Klose, he uses some sort of out of focus vignetting that renders everything outside of the center 20% fuzzy and the result is that it’s VERY distracting. I’m all for highlighting the person who’s the center of attention for that particular moment but not at the sake of basically eliminating everything else taking place on stage. Don’t get me wrong, the video IS watchable but it goes down as THE worse concert vid I’ve ever seen. Whadda shame!

In closing, this concert vid is fun. The songs are catchy and the sound is good. You won’t find soaring solos such as what made the Bonamassa Ft. Wayne vid so appealing but this blu-ray is entertaining and it seems to grow on you with every listen. I recommend adding this concert to your collection but if you wish to see and hear it before you buy, they’ve been running this video on Palladia lately. Check it out!
