Turn It Up Tuesday! (Special Thursday Edition)

I don’t mean to keep talking about Animoto, but it’s part of the story as to how I doscovered today’s featured artist, Mike Gallagher.

Part of the process of creating a video on Animoto is selecting the music you want to play with your video. You can upload your own music, or select from Animoto’s library. Music is available from a number of genres, including Electronica, Gospel, Singer/Songwriter, Pop, Jazz, Rock, etc. and you can listen to samples of each song before selecting.

A couple of the songs were by Mike Gallagher and I loved them! I googled him, found his website, and a link to his Myspace page where you can listen to 10 full-length songs. They are all instrumental guitar pieces, and this guy rocks! He would probably be considered a, ‘Shredder’ but he still has feel, soul and melodic sensibility.

I’m often left cold by many shredder types who have amazing chops and speed but lack feel and tone. Mike Gallagher is an exception to that dynamic. He’s got the whole package; speed, technical ability, AND soul and feel. He’s got 3 CD’s (Extreme Guitar I, Extreme Guitar II and Extreme Guitar III) and I’m going to look into them all.

Click this link to visit Mike’s Myspace page and take a listen to these 10 songs. Let me know what you think!

Enjoy, and TURN IT UP!

Turn It Up Tuesday!

I know that I’ve posted Andy Timmons stuff before, but just had to share this one. Pretty amazing to watch him work.

In case you’re wondering, Andy’s main guitar (as played in the video) is a custom Ibanez with an alder body, maple neck, one humbucker and 2 single-coil pickups. D’Addario strings .010 to .046.

Watch in full screen mode and crank this bad boy up!

Turn It Up Tuesday!

A couple cuts from D.I.E. Minor by Weedkiller, featuring Eric Czar on guitars and bass, and vocals by Kevin ‘Bocko’ Corrigan. Self-produced and recorded,  it’s very interesting, very different, and very good in my opinion.

Instrumentally it’s reminiscent of Alice In Chains’ 1994 EP, Jar of Flies

Bocko’s dark and growling vocals are an acquired taste…and take some getting used to. That being said however, they contrast nicely against Eric’s melodic guitar and fretless bass playing. Discord and contrast is a common trait to many of Eric’s ambient pieces on youtube as well.

I’ve got the entire D.I.E. Minor CD on my iPod, and I love it.

Enjoy, and Turn It Up!

A couple from the 1974 Loggins and Messina release, ‘Mother Lode.’

Yeah, that’s the space I’m in today. Enjoy, and Turn It Up!

Turn It Up Tuesday!

My affinity for music originated from Dad’s Doc Severinsen and Herb Albert records, and Mom’s Showtune/Musicals albums (such as Oklahoma, South Pacific, etc).

From there I fell in love the the following pop songs on a jukebox at the local burger joint. I used to ride my bicycle there with a pocket full of dimes.

Needless to say, I migrated to heavier rock as soon as I discovered it, but the following songs were early favorites. I’m sure the waitresses grew tired seeing me in there, playing them repeatedly. I was 12 at the time (the only way I know that is that DP’s cover of Kentucky Woman came out in ’68).

60′s jukebox favorites – enjoy, and turn it up!

Turn It Up Tuesday!

I know our Turn It Up Tuesday feature has been pretty ‘hit-and-miss’ lately. I can’t promise that we’re 100% back on track, but will try to do a better job getting something posted on a regular basis.

Here’s 3 of my favorites from The James Gang and Joe Walsh.

Enjoy, and Turn It Up!

Turn It Up Tuesday!

Live and raw analog brilliance. Take note kids; this is how it’s done without pitch correction, Pro Tools, digial processors, reverb and/or effects pedals.

Most meatloaf needs ketchup. This steak needs no seasoning at all.

UFO’s Classic Album ‘Phenomenon’ Remastered! YES!!!

I was surfing youtube looking for some decent UFO clips when I found the following videos. I was absolutely STOKED to learn that their 1974 album Phenomenon has been digitally remastered!

It could be that the remastered version has been around for a while, but was news to me. Very good news.

Phenomenon has always been one of my favorite recordings, but I always wished it had been produced and/or engineered better. While the album absolutely rocks – and rocks hard – it always sounded thin and compressed to me. Tragically so, given the quality of the songs.

The remastered version of this absolute CLASSIC brings it back to life!

Check out the following clips, and then go grab yourself a copy. I’d recommend ordering the remastered CD and not downloading it from iTunes. It’s worth the higher sonic quality to spend a couple more bucks and wait for it in the mail…besides, you can always download the CD to your iPod anyway.

I know it’s not Tuesday, but enjoy, and TURN IT UP!
